Knowing the reality of underground water reserves is a key aspect in the proper management of water resources in the area. Currently, the overexploitation of this resource means that 50% more is extracted than what the aquifer recharges annually by natural means, that is, we draw more water than nature is able to replace.
As a consequence, underground water levels fall more and more, increasing production costs in the agricultural sector and seriously endangering the survival of the current socioeconomic model and the ecological structure of the area.
For all these reasons, the Duero Hydrographic Confederation has launched this study in collaboration with the IGME with two clear objectives: to know the current state of the under groundwater mass and to propose measures that allow the gradual recharge of the aquifer, thanks to water savings with a correct agricultural management and with measures of artificial recharge of the mass.
